We almost have a LYS again! The grand opening of Knitting Off Broadway is scheduled for after xmas, but they had a "trunk show" this past Friday and Saturday. I stopped by to check it out, but there was not much to check out just yet. Too bad, because the flyer led me to believe that there would at least be some notions for sale. Instead, there were knitted sweaters to try on. Now there's a concept: being able to try on a sweater to see how it looks before knitting for weeks on end to find out it is not "you".
The store was a challenge to find, partly because I did not read the flyer carefully. I saw the "near Jefferson and Broadway" part and I knew where that was, but I did not realize that the shop was actually on a side street (the "off" in "Off Broadway" - duh). The side street is not much more than a glorified alley, and parking will be a challenge, especially on Saturdays when they have classes scheduled all day long. Tucked away where they are lends an air of exclusivity to the shop as well. We'll see how that works out. But their hours are better (for me, at least), they plan to offer lots of upscale yarn, and it sounds like the co-owners have assistants and instructors lined up.
Here's to their success!

I have been in Knitting off Broadway recently, and I thought they had a nice selection of yarns. I agree that the parking and finding the store is a challenge. The young woman who helped me was upbeat and pleasant.
I visited Knitting off Broadway last Thursday with my best friend who is from out of town and my daughter. To say we were not made to feel welcome was a complete understatement. The woman/owner?? made several inappropiate and down right rude comments concerning my daughter. Note to yarn lovers with children, children are not made to feel welcome. This behavior prompted my best friend and I to leave without supporting the LYS. Even if the yarn would have been 1/2 the price of the competitor, we still would purchase from the much friendlier competitors in the area. However, the employee working with the woman/owner?? was very friendly and nice, but did seem somewhat timid due to the overbearing nature of the other woman/owner??.
I had a similar experience when I went to the shop with my four year old. We had looked forward to the trip to buy yarn for her sweater all week. When we got there, the experience was so unpleasant that we too, looked for another retailer to supply the yarn...lovely merchandise, not so lovely experience...I don't plan on making purchases there in the future.
I also feel I got the brush off when I visited "Knitting Off Broadway". I went with my sister, who is an experienced knitter, and my young niece. I myself am just a beginner. They seemed overly concerned about my young niece who had yet to touch one item in the store. When someone finally asked if I needed help, I told her what I was interested in looking at but she walked away ignoring my request. I will certainly shop elsewhere.
