I'm getting thinner singles, but only because I pre-draft the wool to gossamer first. Is this normal?

Yes, it's very normal! I almost always pre-draft my roving/top. Now that I've gotten used to spinning longdraw method, I can't stand a highly compacted piece of fiber.
